Cornwall in Print
Hello, and welcome to my Cornwall in Print website!
The aim of this site and my research is to uncover the untold stories of the historic print industry in Cornwall. Its primary focus will be the role of women but will endeavour to tell the stories of all those connected to the industry and Cornwall’s place within this.

Little has been written about the Cornish print industry, and it is currently difficult to determine the exact date printing arrived in Cornwall and even more difficult to trace surviving works by early Cornish printers – either examples of their work have not survived or their venture into printing was fleeting.

After the end to centuries of governmental restrictions to the presses in the late 17th and three centuries after printing using wooden presses and moveable metal type was invented by Johannes Gutenberg – Cornwall gained its first presses and printing spread gradually and flourished in response to Cornwall’s industrial and commercial need.
